This is your place to discover the classes you need to get involved with Globe Student Media. These classes are uniqely designed to effectively develop and integrate skills across all formats of media production.
Television/Video Production Emphasis:
COMM 2200: Video Production Fundamentals &
COMM 2205: Video Production Lab
Through a combination of lectures and labs, students will learn to effectively use aesthetic theories of visual imaging and sound design. Students will learn the production process by participating in hands-on studio and field production, and post-production editing. Students will increase media literacy by becoming active viewers of visual media rather than mere passive receivers of information. The Video Production Lab (COMM 2205) is to be taken concurrently with COMM 2200.
COMM 2310: Broadcast News Production &
COMM 2311: Broadcast News Production Lab
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to participate in a weekly, student-produced, campus television news program. Using skills learned in COMM2200, students would research and write news stories, record and edit news packages, participate in weekly show planning, and serve as talent and crew for the weekly newscast. This course strengthens news production skills and prepares students to enter the workforce in news broadcasting. The Broadcast News Production Lab (COMM 2311) is to be taken concurrently with COMM 2310.
COMM 2510: Advanced Video Production - Documentary &
COMM 2511: Advanced Video Production Lab
This course is offered to students who have learned fundamental media production skills through coursework and real-world production opportunities. Students will work as a class production crew to take documentary film projects from initial conception, through the production process, and product distribution. The Advanced Video Production Lab (COMM 2511) is to be taken concurrently with COMM 2510.

COMM 2560: Advanced Radio Production/Performance &
COMM 2561: Advanced Radio Production/Performance Lab
COMM 2560 & COMM 2561 give students an unequaled opportunity for in-depth instruction and experience in the world of radio.
The Advanced Radio Production/Performance class and Lab enable students to expand on the concepts introduced in the beginning radio production classes. That means in addition to progressing in the development of vital skills radio personnel use on a daily basis, students who create their radio shows in the beginning radio class can continue their programs in the advanced class!
By becoming daily participants to Globe Radio, SLCC's student radio station, students gain access to industry-standard equipment crucial for developing a skill set employers look for in job candidates.

Journalism/Print Emphasis:
COMM 1610: Journalism I - Reporting/Writing

Now, use those skills you’ve acquired over the years to get your name and your thoughts in print!
Taking SLCC’s journalism classes give you the opportunities to have your views, thoughts and observations printed in the College’s student-run newspaper, The Globe Newspaper.
Too, you’ll learn how to write news stories for the web, radio newscasts and television news programs.
All it takes to get started is to enroll in COMM 1610, “Journalism I – Reporting/Writing”.
You learn from the people who been there: they’ve covered the fires and plane crashes, the demonstrations, written for national news outlets and been published world-wide. Their experience becomes your guide to a career in journalism.

This is a basic survey course in journalism, emphasizing fact finding and news writing, including investigative reporting on specific beats. Members of the class contribute to the student newspaper and to student television. This course is designed to prepare students to write for a media outlet and to cover regular reporting beats for various mass mediums. Students become thoroughly familiar with the basic practices, rules, ethics, and laws of journalism. Students who successfully exit the course will have intensive experience in media reporting and writing.
This course requires meticulous and rigorous writing.
